The Toy Department – Episode 51

In Episode 51, Derek Madden and Matt Kolsky flirt with some non-toy-department issues as they open with a few words about the miserable, repulsive, inconsiderate behavior of The Year 2016… but swim safely back to shallow waters for discussions of:

  • The Cleveland Cavaliers’ Christmas Day victory over the Golden State Warriors (5:40), and what it means for the rest of the NBA season and their presumed eventual NBA Finals matchup… and whether there is any team out there that might be a able to disrupt that eventuality (14:00)…
  • The National Football League (17:00) and how they have reached their goal of general league-wide parity… Plus a breakdown of some potential playoff situations and vague Super Bowl matchup predictions (AFC first, NFC around 26:20)…
  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (42:30) and a probably not-that-surprising difference of opinion between Madden and Kolsky on the quality of that film… and whether Hollywood is still making action movies for people like Derek Madden (49:35)…
  • Homework for next week: when Madden will FINALLY watch the excellent documentary film Scratch (56:25)… and the guys will also do some year-in-review stuff with music and tv and possibly movies (57:10)… and will also discuss the new Run the Jewels record RTJ3 (58:35) now that Derek has figured out how to acquire it… ALSO – not mentioned, but the guys will also finally get around to revisiting the Clash’s London Calling in next week’s pod!!!!!!!!!! (they forgot this week)

  • A reviewing and rehashing of the classic A Tribe Called Quest album The Low End Theory (15:00)… An honorific segment about one of the seminal albums of 1990’s hip hop, though Madden and Kolsky come at it from slightly different perspectives…
  • Some discussion of the current state of television (26:40) and the fact that we seem to be faced with a dearth of quality television despite living in the middle of the Peak TV movement… What does it all mean? Or is it just a temporary lull?

In Episode 32, Derek Madden and Matt Kolsky briefly revisit their intense golf argument from last week, but avoid falling too deeply down that hole… Instead they get in some quick hitters on:

  • The new HBO drama The Night Of (3:00) and Derek’s confidence in it compared to Kolsky’s early questions about its quality…
  • USA Network’s hotshot cyberdrama Mr. Robot (8:55) – where Kolsky has faith but Derek is developing some quality questions…

Things take a bit of a morbid turn from there as Madden and Kolsky pay tribute to two titans of culture who passed away in the last week – Phife Dawg of A Tribe Called Quest (24:20) and comedian Garry Shandling (27:50). Neither Madden nor Kolsky has seen Batman v. Superman, but they still get into that (33:55) and then they finish strong with a chat about the crowning achievement of college basketball — One Shining Moment (44:00).

The Toy Department – Episode 13

In Episode 13, Derek Madden and Matt Kolsky show up a day late… But doesn’t that just mean their thoughts are that much more well-considered?? The boys start with some Oscars talk, breaking down Chris Rock’s performance and some of the award-winners, then shift to hating on Duke basketball (18:30). Then, once the topic is basketball, it’s only natural to talk about the greatness of Steph Curry (26:50). The show closes with some music talk – breaking down the Foo Fighters’ “Band Announcement” (40:20) and talking a little about putting Dave Grohl’s career into context (45:00).

The Toy Department – Episode 8

In Episode 8, Derek Madden tracks Matt Kolsky down while he’s driving around the Bay Area for a delightful chat that begins with Blake Griffin’s recent mishap (which is another word for punching your friend in the face and breaking your own hand) and then turns to the recent rumors that baseball is considering adding the DH to the National League (16:30). Then they jump OFF of the sports page as they revisit R. Kelly with a quick discussion of the singer’s recent GQ interview (29:30) which of course leads to some big picture questions about cognitive dissonance (around 40:00). Thankfully the conversation takes a lighter turn after that, as Madden and Kolsky get into the Friends-assaince, if you will — the apparent rash of young people binge-watching Friends on Netflix (48:25). Finally, they wrap things up by assigning some homework (58:30) and teasing ahead to next week’s episode…
