The Toy Department – Episode 409

In Episode 409, Madden and Kolsky have a quick post-holiday catch-up before diving right into:

  • An underwhelming Part 1 of TJ’s Final on The Challenge: Battle of the Eras (3:00) and how our hosts agree with Kyland’s take on the overwhelming amount of swimming…
  • The latest in the Taylor Sheridan universe — Landman (16:20) and how Sheridan continues to defy all reason with his level of productivity, plus some tremendous acting from Billy Bob Thornton and company…
  • Netflix’s delightful spy thriller Black Doves (26:05) and the joy of a nicely packaged, easily completed and wildly enjoyable piece of television…
  • The new show No Good Deed (29:50), also on Netflix, and whether it’s doing too much or having the right amount of fun…
  • Hulu’s Interior Chinatown (35:00), a totally original take on well-trodden TV territory, and the brilliance of Ronny Chieng…
  • Homework for next week (44:15), including: the conclusion of TJ’s Final on The Challenge: Battle of the Eras, the Netflix movie Carry-On, the Oscar hopeful Emilia Perez (also on Netflix) and the Jason Reitman film Saturday Night, about the lead-up to the first airing of Saturday Night Live…

The Toy Department – Episode 311

In Episode 311, Madden and Kolsky have an uncomfortably specific discussion about the Kolsky family’s recent bout with hand-foot-mouth disease before shaking it off and diving into:

  • A few thoughts on the ending of AMC’s Better Call Saul (6:55) and what a truly spectacular show it turned out to be…
  • Apple TV+’s new offering Black Bird (13:55) and how Paul Walter Hauser is a uniquely dynamic performer, particularly in the sort of creepy role he inhabits here…
  • Netflix’s forgettable film offering The Man from Toronto (20:45) and just what exactly is going on with the remarkable quality of bland content on that service…
  • Amazon’s new League of Their Own show (24:05) and how it’s watchable and not bad, but just doesn’t quite come together how one might hope…
  • This week’s episode of The Challenge USA on CBS (29:00) and how Leo deserves some flowers (and also maybe some sympathy for his failing businesses?) plus thoughts on the latest twist in the game…
  • Homework for TWO Fridays from now (41:50), including: HBO’s new Game of Thrones show House of the Dragon, Amazon’s new Lord of the Rings show The Rings of Power, and Netflix’s Manti Te’o doc Untold: The Girlfriend Who Didn’t Exist, plus the more of The Challenge USA on CBS…

The Toy Department – Episode 11

In Episode 11, Derek Madden and Matt Kolsky get right into the thick of things with a Kanye West deep dive… All jokes aside, there’s a lot to get into with Mr. West – from his music to his internet behavior, he is nothing if not interest-worthy! Then it’s a little bit of a sports injection with a brief discussion of the Duke/UNC rivalry and college sports in general (40:30), before closing with some TV talk (48:50) as the winter/spring season starts to kick into gear!!
